Masters In Coaching Episode XLVII: Athletics Director Courtney Thomsen

Tim Cates talks with Courtney Thomsen about her path to becoming the Athletic Director at Midland University. Courtney was a stand out soccer player who got into coaching, then became a Sports Information Director at MCU before taking over as the schools AD. She also talks about her experience going through the MCAA Program at Concordia University Irvine.

About Courtney

Courtney Thomsen was named the Director of Midland Athletics in July 2021 after serving as director of athletics for Marymount California University for five years. Under her guidance, the university experienced growth within the athletic department with the addition of six varsity sports.

Thomsen also worked tirelessly to cultivate student-athletes both on and off the field. She helped form the Mariners Captain's Council, a group that helped enhance the leadership opportunities for MCU's student-athletes and would later help develop the Mariner Study Hall program. Thomsen also oversaw the addition of a student-athlete academic advisor role.

Prior to serving as AD, she was head women's soccer coach at MCU from 2012-17, earning Cal Pac Coach of the Year honors in 2014 and 2015. She also served as the sports information director from 2015-17.

A native of Redondo Beach, California, Thomsen was a soccer player at the University of Arizona (NCAA DI) from 2001-2003 and later served as an undergraduate assistant coach for the Wildcats. She holds a Bachelor of Science, Family Studies and Human Development from U of A and has a Master's in Coaching and Athletics Administration from Concordia University Irvine. Thomsen and her husband have three children; Theo, Miles, and Stella.
