The B.S. in Chemistry is designed for students who want to pursue advanced study or careers in research-intensive or health-related fields. You’ll learn how to formulate, investigate, analyze, and articulate solutions to major problems in the natural sciences.

This program includes 15 required courses and four electives, with advanced coursework in calculus, physical chemistry, and calculus-based physics. You’ll also complete a senior thesis, where you’ll conduct original research, write a formal paper, and present your findings to faculty and peers.

Concordia University Irvine is among a distinctive group of universities that offer a comprehensive liberal arts curriculum for all of its students. Our nationally recognized Enduring Questions & Ideas curriculum (Q&I, for short) is carefully crafted so that you discover the purpose of a liberal arts education — to grow intellectually, ethically, and spiritually.

As a chem major, you’ll gain practical research experience in Concordia’s modern laboratories and through faculty-led projects in chemical physics, biochemistry, and molecular biology. Students can design projects in any of the five foundational areas of chemistry — analytical, physical, inorganic, organic, and biochemistry — and may present findings at campus and regional events.

You’ll have opportunities to:

  • Participate in semester and summer research projects
  • Present at the President’s Academic Showcase
  • Attend regional scientific conferences

A B.S. in Chemistry opens doors to research, innovation, and leadership across countless industries. Chemists are in demand in laboratories, healthcare, government, and environmental organizations — and California is one of the top five states for chemistry employment.1

Chemist roles are projected to grow 5% between 2024 and 2034, faster than the average rate for all occupations, with about 4,700 openings each year.1 Graduates often continue on to master’s or doctoral programs, while others enter the workforce immediately in scientific or analytical positions.
