About the Provost
The Senior Vice President and Provost is the chief academic officer of the University with responsibility for guiding the academic development and direction of the institution in accordance with the University’s mission:
“Concordia University Irvine, a comprehensive Lutheran Christian university guided by Christ’s Great Commission, develops wise, honorable, and cultivated citizens to serve society and the church.”
The Provost’s Office has primary responsibility of implementing the University’s academic strategic plan and serves as liaison with other University divisions in strategic and long-range planning. The Provost’s Office has budgetary responsibility for campus academic programs and resources and oversees the development, review, and implementation of all academic policies and regulations.
The Office of the Provost also leads faculty searches, hiring, development, rank and contract processes; oversees the academic governance of the institution; collaborates on creating, implementing, and renewing academic programs; and assists with accreditation processes.

Faculty Spotlight
Dr. Tom Mueller
Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences and Professor of Music
After a national search, Concordia music professor Dr. Tom Mueller has been named Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences, following his service as interim dean from May 2025 to January 2026. An accomplished organist who performs the works of Bach around the world, Mueller joined Concordia in 2015 as a member of the music faculty and became music department chair in 2021. He earned his Doctor of Musical Arts at the Eastman School of Music, a Master of Sacred Music in organ from the University of Notre Dame, and a Bachelor of Music in jazz composition and piano from the University of Maine at Augusta, where he graduated summa cum laude.

Concordia’s Interdisciplinary Culture
Four professors, four disciplines, one conversation at the Lutheranism and the Classics conference
Four Concordia professors from widely different fields traveled to Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne to speak at the Lutheranism and the Classics conference, presenting on subjects as varied as the origin of modern biological taxonomy and how pastors can teach parishioners to appreciate works of art. A philosopher, a biologist, an artist, and a classicist shared one stage, and in doing so they demonstrated the interdisciplinary community Concordia University Irvine cultivates on its own campus. “Irvine’s faculty are special in that we regularly engage in interdisciplinary dialogue,” says Daniel Deen, professor of philosophy. “It’s part of the Concordia ethos.”
