Dr. Gabriela Espinosa — a Yale-trained biomedical engineer, lifelong Christian and member of The Lutheran Church- Missouri Synod (LCMS) since 2008 — has been hired as Concordia University Irvine’s first director of engineering.

In early 2020, Concordia University Irvine faculty member Erin Nelson was on maternity leave and itching to start a new research project, amidst diaper-changing and the round-the-clock care that comes with raising two small children, one a newborn. Dr. Nelson has a strong background in interpersonal communications in the healthcare arena, and when the unprecedented public health lockdowns began, she felt an urgency to dive in and study what was happening in society.
CUI’s longest-serving employee retired last fall and was given the 2021 Servant Leadership Award. LaVeda Carter, who held many positions and was the quiet, driving engine behind events such as the Gala of Stars, served Christ College/Concordia University Irvine for more than 40 years, as one of its first employees.
Students from Concordia University Irvine, Pepperdine University and Fresno Pacific University (FPU) presented original research based on core texts and great books to faculty and peers in an online conference in February. The conference was organized by Dr. C.J. Armstrong, a professor in the History department and Christ College, and director of the CUI Honors Program, and faculty members from Pepperdine and FPU. All three universities are members of the Association of Core Texts and Courses (ACTC), which promotes the use of core texts and great books in college curricula. CUI provost Scott Ashmon serves on the ACTC board.
Concordia University Irvine's perennially-competitive forensics teams finished strong again, with the debate side winning the National Christian College Forensics Invitational (NCCFI) championship, and the speech team placing third in the President's Division III Team Sweepstakes at the National Forensics Association (NFA) Championship.

A team of four CUI Healthcare Administration graduate students participated for the first time in the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) Statewide College Bowl. ACHE is a professional society for healthcare leaders providing career development, education, networking and board certification in healthcare management for 48,000 members worldwide.
Julia Avila ’21, a liberal studies major and musical theatre minor, had acted in every musical and play at Concordia University Irvine in her three years as an undergraduate. But coming into the 2020-21 school year, because of COVID restrictions placed by the state and county, she thought her acting career at Concordia University Irvine might have ended prematurely.
