Matthew Busch ’12 has spent the past year as a professor of trumpet at Nanhai Conservatory of Music on the island province of Hainan, off China’s south coast. He and three other American professors were hired to educate students about the value of western music, and to improve artistic standards for orchestral wind instrument music there, which Busch has done both on and off campus.

Herb Geisler, who spent 29 years at Concordia and built the best university handbell program in the country, retired on an outstanding note. His Concert Handbells group was selected to perform a one-hour evening concert at the National Seminar of the Handbell Musicians of America in July. CUI was the only school or university ensemble to be chosen.

It didn’t seem like a day for an incredible concert. The weather in Germany had been cold and rainy. That morning, the 100 CUI students and 50 companions in our group had taken a city tour and now everyone was tired. One girl lost her dress. Another student misplaced a folder of music. Another left his trumpet in a hotel. Things felt a bit chaotic.
