Starting your VA educational benefits at CUI is simple, just follow the steps below. If you need help, the Veterans Services Office can assist you through the process (949-214-3129).
1. Apply for admission to CUI
All prospective students must complete the appropriate application for admissions. Be sure you familiarize yourself with any requirements that may be part of your application for admission.
2. Complete the Free Application for Federal and Student Aid (FAFSA)
Fill out the FAFSA application, though optional, it is highly recommended that you do. Applying is free and we recommend that you apply as you may be eligible for grants and/or loans. Veterans education benefits do not count as income in determining your eligibility for Federal Financial Aid. School code 013885. For more information contact the Financial Aid Office
**If you are a veteran of the Armed Forces it changes your dependency status to Independent. If this is the only thing making you an Independent (i.e. you are under 24, not married, have no dependents, etc.), we must confirm that you are a veteran by obtaining a copy of your DD-214.
3. Submit all transcripts and test scores
Students are required to submit official transcripts from all prior attended colleges, universities, and training institutes. This includes previous military training. If you have completed any Prior Learning Assessments (PLA), such as CLEP or DSST, have transcripts delivered directly to CUI’s records office. All transcripts must be received before the end of your first semester.

Submit your military transcripts with your admissions application. You may be eligible for college credit from going to your military schools (basic training, fielding of equipment, pathfinder, MOS/AIT, etc.) If you are currently active duty, reserve or national guard, you should request new transcripts to be sent to CUI after each military school you attend. 4. Apply for veterans educational benefits
Apply to the VA for educational benefits by going to the Veterans Online Application (VONAPP) website. Be sure to do this early as it can take 3-5 weeks to receive your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) by letter mail. If you have any questions you can call the VA at 888-442-4551. If you have previously applied for benefits this step can be skipped, provide the Veterans Service Office with a copy of your Certificate of Eligibility. If you are a transfer student, complete VA Form 22-1995/5495.
*You may be entitled for the GI Bill, however, you must still apply for it and receive your Certificate of Eligibility (COE).
**For dependents using the Ch 33 Transfer of Entitlement, the sponsor must transfer benefits through the DoD website at archive.defense.gov, while still actively serving. The dependent will receive an award letter in about 3-5 weeks, at which point, they can apply for the Ch 33 benefits through the VONAPP website.

5. Register for classes
Once you are selected for admission to the university, the next step is to register for your classes. Students must enroll in classes prior to requesting certification for VA educational benefits. Only register for classes that are required for your major. If you need help selecting classes, contact the advising office and make an appointment with them.
6. Pay your tuition and fees
If you are using Chapter 33-Post 9/11 GI Bill at the 100% rate or Chapter 31-Vocational Rehabilitation make sure you contact the Veterans Service Office in advance of the payment deadline (1 week before start of class) so that your enrollment deposit can be waived. All other students using the GI Bill will need to come up with a payment plan with the Bursar Office.
7. Request to be Certified
For each term you are enrolled, you will need to submit an online “Certification Request” form, allowing CUI to certify your enrollment to the VA. This online form is located here.
8. Visit Veterans Services Office and connect with other veterans on campus
The Veterans Service Office is your central point of contact for any veteran-related questions or support needs while you attend CUI. Once all prior steps are complete, check in with the Veterans Affair Coordinator to file your request to certify your enrollment to the VA.
9. Create an Education Plan
Before the end of your first semester and after all your transcripts are received and evaluated, you must meet with an academic adviser. An academic adviser will help you to develop your Education Plan. After your first semester, students with no Education Plan on file or pending transcripts will not be certified for future semesters until both tasks are completed.
10. Set up an ebenefits account
Register with VA eBenefits and make a PREMIUM account to track your educational benefits, such as your deposits from the VA, history of certification status, remaining entitlements, manage direct deposit, or update your address.
