2021 Trembath Lecture

Called By Whom and How? Reflections on the Structure of Vocation by Rev. Dr. David W. Loy
Professor of Philosophy, Theology and Ethics

Saturday, January 30, 2021

Vocation is God’s call for us to love our neighbors in our various roles in life. But how does God call us? Lutheran theologians have answered this question differently, which has led them to disagree about whether non-Christians have vocations in the same way that Christians do. In this talk, Loy examines the structure of God’s call, arguing that God’s call to love our neighbors comes both through the Gospel and through the needs of our neighbors. Thus, all people have vocations, but only Christians understand the fullness of the call and the loving-kindness of the one who calls.
