We welcome you in person, on campus!

Make connections. With the support of Peer Advising Leaders (PALs), orientation will help you make connections that will benefit your experience at Concordia.

Orientation is mandatory and features a myriad of fun activities and informative sessions. Each event has been planned with a specific purpose in mind to aid your academic and personal success at Concordia. Research shows that participation in orientation contributes to a smoother transition into college. Your involvement in orientation is the first step toward building your college experience at Concordia University Irvine.

Orientation at Concordia University Irvine is designed to help you:

  • Transition smoothly into your new environment
  • Connect you with the student body and develop friendships with your peers
  • Meet faculty and staff in an interpersonal setting
  • Learn about the campus culture
  • Acclimate to a new living situation
  • Problem-solve correctly to deal with transitional issues you may/will experience

Meal Registration

SOAR Weekend Schedule

Friday, August 20th

8:00 am - 12:00 pm: Mandatory- All New Student Check-in

East Parking Lot
It is required for all new students to check-in during their assigned time. All check-ins will be a drive-thru system where students will get their welcome packet with their SOAR schedule for the weekend

8:00 am - 12:00 pm: Residential Student Move-in

Students will be directed to the building where their housing placement is located in order to get their key.

10:30 am - 11:00 am: Mandatory- Commuter Student Workshop

DeNault Auditorium, Grimm Hall 120
Come meet other commuters, while enjoying fun games and a chance to win prizes! This workshop will also provide more information about Concordia, what to expect as a commuter, spaces to hang out around campus, and ways to get involved.

11:00 am - 1:30 pm: SOAR Family Lunch

Commons Lawn
Students, make sure to wear your wristband, as meals will be provided for all new students. Families, if you did not pre-purchase your meal tickets they will be for sale during meal times on the Student Union patio. for $15.

11:30 am - 1:30 pm: Mandatory- Academic and Resource Fair

CU Arena (Gym) Breezeway
Come check out all that our school has to offer to help you succeed academically, socially, and spiritually. Students who complete their SOAR passport by visiting each table will be entered into the Saturday Eagle Eye Awards Ceremony raffle, featuring a grand prize, and other prizes worth up to $500

1:30 pm - 2:00 pm: Mandatory- Presidential and PAC Welcome

New students will be addressed by Concordia University Irvine’s President, Dr. Michael Thomas, our ASCUI President, Ryan Jones, and the Peer Advising Coordinators (PACs).

2:00 pm - 3:35 pm: Mandatory- New Student Session w/ PALs

Amphitheater
This session will provide students the opportunity to meet each other and create new friendships. In addition to meeting your peers, you’ll also meet your Peer Advising Leaders (PALs), and your PAL group, which is identified on the front of your nametag.

2:00 pm - 3:35 pm: Parent Session

Parents are invited to hear from Concordia University leadership about what to expect from the Concordia experience and how to support your student through their first year.

You will hear from:

  • Concordia University President - Dr. Michael Thomas
  • Senior Vice President, Provost - Rev. Dr. Scott Ashmon
  • Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students - Megan Bouslaugh
  • Athletic Director - Crystal Rosenthal
  • Associate Dean for Student Wellness - Michelle Laabs

3:45 pm - 4:30 pm: SOAR Family Worship

Please join us for a special abbey west (campus ministry team)-led worship service. This is an opportunity to gather with your family to worship and hear a blessing as you prepare for this next chapter of your life.

4:30 pm - 6:30 pm: Family Dinner

Commons Lawn
Students and families are welcome to pick up their dinner during this time and attend the specialty group sessions of their choice, or just enjoy their meal under the tent.

4:30 pm - 5:00 pm: Honors Welcome Session

DeNault Auditorium, Grimm Hall 120
Honors Program students and their families are invited to meet with Dr. CJ Armstrong, the Director of the Honors Program, to learn more about the program, the courses, and the experience they will have in the Honors Program.

5:30 pm - 6:00 pm: Mandatory- Transfer Workshop

Grimm Hall North 301

Transfer students and their families are invited to learn the ins and outs of succeeding academically at CUI through the resources available to them and hear about CUI’s unique Q & I general education courses from Dr. David Loy, Associate Dean for Christ College, and Laura Courvoisier, Associate Dean for Student Development.

6:00 pm - 6:30 pm: Multicultural Community Reception

Students and families are invited to come and meet some of our Student Affairs staff who are here to support our diverse student populations as they transition to Concordia. Spanish speakers will be available.

7:00 pm - 9:00 pm: Parent & Family Happy Hour with President Thomas

Presidential Home (On-campus)
Calling all Parents! Join Dr. Thomas and others for wine and cheese while your student gets settled on campus. This "open house" style event will allow you to meet other families, speak with President Thomas, staff and faculty members, and unwind from a long day of moving in. You are welcome to come and go as you please. We are looking forward to celebrating this special (yet emotional) day with you!

7:00 pm - 8:30 pm: Mandatory- Concordia Live: Town Hall Meeting

CU Center
This session is required for all new Residential and Commuter students. At this meeting, you will get a run-through of on-campus policies, learn about what fun events the Resident Assistants (RAs) have planned for you, and the activities available for students in our new and improved student lounges: Rho Commons and Sigma General.

8:30 pm - 10:00 pm: Social Crawl

Check out the new spaces to hangout on campus, enjoy treats, games, and mingling with other New Eagles! Your RA and other student leaders will be leading you on a crawl for the night! This will also be a second opportunity for you to earn more raffle tickets by attending all the locations at the crawl.

Saturday, August 21st

9:00 am - 10:30 am: Parent Session

Hear from some of the Student Affairs directors, and other department leaders, about key campus resources, what life on campus looks like, and how to best guide your student through their transition to college.

9:30 am - 10:30 am: Mandatory- What you need to know about Campus Technology

CU Center
All new students are required to attend this session to learn about our IT services, how to use Blackboard, and all the exciting things our new campus app has to offer!

10:30 am - 11:30 am: Farewell Family Brunch

Parents are invited to attend brunch before a CU Later send-off celebration with their students (See below).

11:30 am - 12:15 pm: CU Later Send-Off: Photo Booth and Root Beer Floats

Commons Lawn
Snap a family picture at the photo booth and grab a root beer float served by CUI Alumni. This will conclude orientation for parents and families, as our new students continue to get acclimated into the CUI community!

12:30 pm - 1:00 pm: Mandatory- Campus Safety Protocol Student Session

CU Center
In this session, you will hear from the directors of Campus Safety and the services offered to you 24/7. Following this session, you can pick up your ID card if you have not already.

1:00 pm - 1:45 pm: Mandatory- Academic Advising and Career Services Workshop

In the session, you will hear from the Student Success Team about course registration and class change protocols, and also about academic and career planning tools such as class schedules and finding on-campus jobs.

1:45 pm - 4:00 pm: Eagle Eye Scavenger Hunt with PAL Teams

Amphitheater
The PAL teams will explore, hunting for the opportunity to meet faculty, staff, and see campus amenities. This will be the final chance for students to complete their SOAR Passport and earn a raffle ticket for a chance to win one of the grand prizes!

4:00 pm - 4:15 pm: Eagle Eye Award Ceremony

This is it!! You could win big! Come watch the drawing for those who have completed the SOAR passport and received raffle tickets from the following events: Academic and Resource Fair, Social Crawl, and Eagle Eye Scavenger Hunt.

4:30 pm - 6:00 pm: PAL Team Dinner

Meet outside the Student Union to grab dinner with your PAL Team and get pumped for Throwdown!

6:00 pm - 6:15 pm: The Hunt Introduction

Amphitheater
You will NOT want to miss this. Learn about our school-wide spirit initiative and competition: The Hunt for the Golden Eagle. You will learn how to win points for your team all-year long, and also how to win fabulous CUI swag!

6:15 pm - 8:15 pm: Throwdown

Soccer Field
Join your orientation group in a series of competitions against other PAL teams! The winning team will get prizes.

8:30 pm - 10:00 pm: Optional Movie Night

Rho Commons
Come unwind with a showing of Disney Pixar's "Up".

Sunday, August 22nd

10:30 am - 11:30 am: Brunch

Student Union
All new students are able to pick up breakfast using their wristbands during this time.

12:00 pm - 4:00 pm: Explore Irvine (Reservations Required)

Trips to the Irvine Spectrum: Enjoy a trip to our local outdoor mall. The Spectrum meets all your needs, from clothing shops, grabbing a bite to eat with friends, or Target for last-minute dorm purchases. Shuttles will pick-up by Grimm Hall in the main parking lot (See PALs for reservations).

Corona Del Mar Beach: Catch the shuttle to enjoy some sunshine and take a swim in Southern California waters (See PALs for reservations).

12:00 pm - 4:00 pm: Open Recreation

CU Active Intramurals will be set up at the Gym, Tennis Courts, and Uppers Lawn for Open Rec from 12-4pm. Come get a game in, meet new people, and enjoy all that CU Active has to offer.

12:00 pm - 2:00 pm: Paint Party (Reservations Required)

Whether you are interested in making some wall art for your room or looking to relax with some painting, this is the event for you. Come to a guided painting session and refreshments. All supplies will be provided for you (See PALs for reservations).

4:00 pm- 6:15 pm: SOAR Team Dinner & Dessert with the President

Student Union
Meet with your PAL team for dinner and attend an ice cream social at President Thomas’ home. During this time, your PAL will also show you where to find your classrooms so you are prepared for your first day of school!

6:30 pm- 7:30 pm: CU Source Kickoff

CU Center
As John 1:1-4 shows us, Christ is the source of everything we know. Creation, life,everlasting life; it all begins and ends in Him. With our understanding of thattruth comes the passion to celebrate Christ as the center and purpose of ourworship. He is the source. Our Sunday evening service includes HolyCommunion every week, utilizes a small acoustic ensemble, and shares the life-changing message of Jesus. Starting August, 29th, Source will be held in GoodShepherd Chapel.

New Student Orientation

SOAR is for all incoming students - First-Year freshman, transfer students, visiting students, and readmitted students.


Registration & Fees

All new students will be assessed a $165 New Student Orientation fee on their student account whether or not they choose to participate. SOAR is mandatory as the schedule is designed specifically to help you transition positively to Concordia.


Preparing for Orientation

We want to be sure you have everything you need as you prepare for the Fall semester. If you have questions at any step along the way, please don’t hesitate to contact the Office of First-Year Experience Programs & Initiatives at (949) 214-3059 or email [email protected]

  • Complete each step found in Concordia’s Checklist for Admitted Students.
  • Check MyRecords weekly for any HOLDs placed by the Bursar Office, Office of Financial Aid, or Wellness Center for any outstanding paperwork you have yet to submit.
  • Familiarize yourself with the Student Handbook and Student Code of Conduct.
  • Purchase your books needed for each class by viewing your class schedule in MyRecords and selecting "Buy Textbooks."
  • Visit Campus Safety online to apply for your student ID card and parking permit.
