Inspired by Around-the-World Semester®

May 03, 2019 - 1 minute read

A 2019 International Studies graduate, Maile reflects on time-management, amazing conversations that occur when traveling, and the importance of connection in college.

What led you to Concordia University Irvine?

I was recruited for and played on the Women’s Indoor and Sand Volleyball Teams.

What influenced the choice of your major?

I chose International Studies after completing the Around-the-World Semester® (ATW). I was so inspired during my ATW semester and wanted to continue to learn about all things international.

Which faculty or staff member do you most admire?

I really admire Dr. Mangum. I had a minor in Economics and I really enjoyed learning in his classes. He always found a way to connect what we were learning to the global world in both a business/economic perspective but also in relation to culture and people!

Where have you experienced growth as a student?

I believe I experienced the most growth being a student-athlete and studying abroad on the Around-the-World Semester®. Both taught me about time management, dedication, and working with others. I am so grateful that I was able to do both of these things at CUI.

What would be your ideal job?

My ideal job would be living and working abroad with a social impact company that supports sustainable, economic development in rural or underserved communities.

What is one thing you have most valued about your time at CUI?

One thing I valued most at CUI was the people I was able to surround myself with - both other students and also professors! I know that I have life long friends and mentors from CUI.

Who are your heroes in real life?

My real life hero is my mother. She supports me in every way that I could hope for. She encourages me to follow my heart and pursue what really makes me happy.
