In the former lumber town of Navajo, New Mexico, CUI cross-cultural ministry graduate Tim Norton and his family minister to people of the Navajo Nation in the midst of high poverty, social problems and great cultural and natural beauty. With the help of CUI teams and interns, Norton leads the people of Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church as they bring the restoring message of the gospel to the reservation.

Dr. Michael Thomas experienced a spiritual renewal as he was finishing high school which led him from the small Montana logging town where he grew up into a career in Lutheran higher education. Dr. Thomas became the fifth president of Concordia University Irvine in January.

Hank and Dixie Aschbrenner lead by example when it comes to generosity. Since 1994, Hank has worked with Concordia Irvine to raise funds for numerous projects. But Hank doesn’t just raise funds — the Aschbrenners give around 30 percent of their annual income to Lutheran universities and churches, and encourage others to do the same.

Katherine Pond ’05 has been a strong supporter of Concordia since she was a young adult. She has been involved in the mentor program and CUI’s Business Insight Series breakfasts. This year, CUI named her the Alumna of the Year for Professional Achievement.
Heather Manning ’94 and husband Mark Manning ’94 started Searchlight Ministries, a Lutheran Church in Orange, in 2001, and soon became known as a church where families and kids with special needs are welcome. Heather was recognized with the Alumna of the Year for Distinguished Service award.
