S1 E37 Object’s Lesson(ing): What It’s Like To Be A Thing

February 25, 2021 - 3 minute read

David Schulz (Professor and Chair of Communication at CUI) clues us in to object oriented ontology and the work of Bruno Latour. If this business about “flat ontology” means nothing to you, that’s just fine: this talk will give you an overview and some possible interpretations. This is a potent interdisciplinary conversation from an expert in rhetoric.

Dr. Schulz began teaching in 1995 at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas where he taught public speaking, interpersonal communication, argumentation & debate, and was an assistant coach for the speech and debate team. In 1998 he moved to Pennsylvania State University where he taught public speaking, rhetorical theory, and a series of courses as the director for the Speech Communication Department's continuing education and distance learning program. Dr. Schulz also taught a communication skills for engineers course that was designed for doctoral students in Penn State's Engineering program. In 2002 he moved to California State University, Stanislaus where he taught Introduction to Communications, Rhetorical Theory, Persuasive Messages, Intercultural Communication, Freedom of Speech and Press and served as a mentor for the Faculty Mentor Program. In 2006 he moved to Washington to start a new degree program in Communications at Trinity Lutheran College where he taught Public Speaking, Advertising & Marketing, Rhetorical Theory, Research Methods, Senior Capstone, Persuasive Messages and coordinated study abroad trips to Greece and Italy.

Note: We unfortunately lost some great conversation, especially a stimulating theological question posed by Dr. Michael Thomas. Fortunately, this is just the beginning of a longer conversation among colleagues and students, so we invite you to be a part of it.
