Broken Link

Lent 2019

We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain...

Hebrews 6:19

Anchors provide security for sea-going vessels, from small fishing boats to large military and cargo ships. The anchor digs into the bottom of the sea, holding the ship in place, preventing it from drifting into dangerous waters, or from running aground. The writer to the Hebrews compares our hope in Jesus to an anchor. As the anchor holds to the bottom of the ocean, in faith we cling to Jesus Christ. In Him, our hope is secure, it is certain.

This Lenten season, as we journey to the cross, we focus on Christ’s sacrifice for the sin of the world. Through the shed blood of Christ, God’s promises of forgiveness and salvation are “secure and certain.” Faith, anchored in Jesus, is secure!

During a ship training exercise while serving in the U. S. Navy, I experienced the breaking of a chain link to an anchor. My heart sank as I watched the anchor plummet to the bottom of San Diego Bay. Fortunately, with the help of a diver, hoisting equipment, and a barge, we retrieved the anchor before dark.

While the storms of life may weaken our faith, or even create a break in faith, the Holy Spirit who brought us to faith, stands ready to repair the broken link of faith, and securely re-establish us in faith and hope.

Thank you Jesus for your death and resurrection. We anchor our hope in You!
