Teach Us to Pray

Lent 2026

Read Luke 11:1-36

“Lord, teach us to pray.”
This was the disciples’ request—and it is still what we need today. God commands us to call upon His name in prayer. That command is an invitation, not a burden. It comes with a promise: He will be at work in His response (Luke 11:9: Ask… seek… knock).

Yet even with His promise, humans struggle with prayer. By nature, our hearts are hesitant, inclined to doubt or fear, thinking we are too weak, too sinful, or too undeserving to approach God. Our hearts can be resistant, instinctively convinced that prayer matters little, or that God neither wants nor cares for our prayers. It is precisely to counter this instinct that God commands prayer, drawing us back into His mercy and silencing the lies of our hearts. Even though we are sinners, He does not cast us out, but calls us to Himself so that we may acknowledge our need, lament our failings, and seek His grace. Prayer is not for the “holy” or “perfect”—it is a gift, a way to turn toward God and rely on His mercy.

The one who has power to cast out demons, heal the sick, and perform miracles invites us to pray. With all our needs—big and small—this gracious invitation compels us to turn to Him continually, trusting that He is at work even when our hearts falter.

Prayer: Reflect on your needs today. Let them guide your time of prayer.
Lord, teach me to pray. Amen
