Living Ready

Lent 2026

Read Luke 12:35-53

Within Christendom, it is not uncommon to hear earnest—and sometimes intense—talk about the imminent return of Jesus. Often the tone is urgent, even frantic, aimed at shaking people out of complacency in a world that seems content to let each day drift by. Too often, however, this urgency is fueled by fear: anxiety about whether one is prepared enough, has done enough, or has done the right things should Christ return today.

To be sure, Christians can fall into a lackadaisical approach to faith—losing sight of our callings, our witness in the world, and the reality that Christ will indeed return. But must the only alternative be fear and panic? Is there a way to live with watchfulness and urgency without being driven by anxiety?

Jesus anchors us firmly in confident hope. Again and again in Scripture, He reminds us that whether He comes today, tomorrow, or decades from now, our life and salvation are already secure in Him. At the same time, He calls us to be ready and watchful, precisely because we do not know the hour. Christian watchfulness, then, is not rooted in fear of judgment but in trust in Christ’s promises.

Jesus begins this section by saying, “Stay dressed for action” (v. 35). The phrase echoes God’s instructions to Moses and the Israelites on the night of the Passover, when they were to eat with their cloaks tucked in, ready to depart. It is the posture of those prepared for a journey—and also of those ready to work. Christ’s return will be a day of great joy. There is no need to fear it, for our salvation has already been accomplished by Him.

Until that day, our Lord graciously invites us into service in His kingdom for the sake of others. We carry out our callings with diligence and faithfulness, not to earn His favor, but because we trust Him and desire that He would find us faithfully engaged in the work He has entrusted to us when He returns.

Prayer: Dear Lord, remind me each day that a time is coming when no more work can be done. Keep me faithful in serving according to the callings You have entrusted to my care. Amen.
