Read Luke 22:63-23:49
Jesus is brought before every authority available: the religious council, the Roman governor, and King Herod. Throughout the ordeal He is mocked, questioned, and beaten. Yet despite the accusations, both Herod and Pilate conclude that Jesus is innocent. Pilate even attempts three times to release Him. Still, the cries of condemnation persist. Though declared innocent, Jesus is sentenced to crucifixion—a punishment designed to extract every ounce of suffering before extinguishing life itself.
The charges are false. The trial is a sham. The sentence is cruel. And yet Christ is in control.
He stands silent before Herod. He does not argue His case. He does not plead for acquittal. The only testimony He offers is the truth: He is the Christ, the Son of God, the Son of Man. He is innocent—but He is not a victim. This is the plan. He is the Savior. My Savior. Your Savior.
Scripture is clear: if we examine ourselves honestly, there is no need for false witnesses or manipulated proceedings to prove our guilt before Almighty God. The evidence stands. We are sinners.
Yet in God’s courtroom, our Lord speaks a different verdict: “Father, forgive them.” He takes our guilt upon Himself and places His innocence upon us. What seems unbelievable—what seems impossible—is the very heart of the Gospel: God pours out every ounce of His wrath on His Son, so that He may pour out every ounce of His grace and mercy upon us.
Prayer: Dear Jesus, You bore my griefs and carried my sorrows to the cross. You were stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted for me. Thank You for enduring death for my redemption. Amen.
