Read Luke 20:27-21:4
In Jesus’ day, there were many religious groups. The Sadducees were a sect that rejected the spiritual world, denied angels and demons, and accepted only the books of Moses (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy). They were zealous for literal interpretation of Mosaic law, meticulous about Levitical purity, and—most significantly—denied the resurrection.
In our text, they try to twist the law into an extreme argument meant to discredit the hope of resurrection and eternal life. The law they cite, intended to protect and care for women left unmarried or without sons, is carried to an absurd conclusion—all in an effort to show that life beyond death is impossible.
Jesus, however, cuts straight to the one source they recognize: the Scriptures they claim to follow, specifically Exodus 3. He makes it clear: there is a full and certain hope in eternal life. There is a full and certain hope in the resurrection.
In less than a week, Christ will demonstrate this hope in the most undeniable way. He will be crucified to give life to those who are spiritually dead, and He will rise, proving that death cannot hold Him or nullify the power of His life-giving promise. Others may continue to argue against this hope or twist it into absurdities, but Jesus reminds us that we are already part of the ever-living community of God—with the angels and all the saints, including Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—for our God is the God of the living.
Prayer: Eternal God, Lord of life, Your Son has assured forgiveness of sins and deliverance from death. Strengthen me by Your Holy Spirit, that my faith in Christ may increase daily and that I may hold fast in the hope and promise that on the Last Day I will be raised to eternal life. Amen
