Launching Through Luke - Lent 2026

Eyes Opened

Lent 2026

Read Luke 24:13-53

Luke alone records for us the account of Jesus appearing to two disciples on the road to Emmaus. When we first meet them, they are downcast and disheartened by the events of the past few days. Confusion clouds their conversation—reports of an empty tomb, angels announcing that Jesus is alive. They have heard it all, yet they do not know what to make of it.

Jesus Himself draws near and walks with them, though “their eyes were kept from recognizing Him.”

Notice what our Lord does. Before He opens their eyes, He opens the Scriptures. Beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He unfolds how all of God’s Word points to Him—especially to the necessity that the Christ must suffer and then enter into His glory. The cross was not a detour. It was the plan.

Then comes the climax. In the breaking of the bread, their eyes are opened. They recognize Him. Later, when they rejoin the other disciples, these are the two things they report: how He spoke to them on the road, and how He was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.

Jesus’ revelations to the two disciples mirror what He does for us still today. On this Easter road of faith, Christ walks with us. We have heard the report: the tomb is empty. We have heard the proclamation: He is risen. And still He comes to us—opening the Scriptures, showing us how all of God’s promises are fulfilled in Him, assuring us that He bore our sins and secured our life. He also makes Himself known in the breaking of the bread, as we join in the feast of His church, the Lord’s Supper. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed, alleluia!

Prayer: Heavenly Father, through the resurrection of Your Son You have overcome death and opened the gate of everlasting life. Grant Your people a joyful spirit as we celebrate Christ’s resurrection. Strengthen me each day in the confident hope of the resurrection, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
