Christ’s Victory in Our Temptation

Lent 2026

Read Luke 4:1-13

There is much we do not know or fully understand about the devil. God’s Word does not spend much time focusing on him, because Scripture is more rightly centered on Christ. We do not need to fix our attention on the devil, especially when this passage shows us that Christ withstands every temptation he brings—even when we fall and fail in our own lives. Ultimately, Christ not only withstands the devil; He defeats him through the cross and the resurrection. That victory is final. That victory is ours.

In this text, Christ also does something else for us: He demonstrates the power of God’s Word of truth in the face of the father of lies.

The devil tempts us in order to draw us into sin. Then he throws that sin in our face, seeking to create doubt that God’s grace could truly extend to us. He aims to drive us into despair over our failed attempts to respond to God’s grace with obedience, hoping we will abandon all hope in Christ. This is why we need to hear God’s Word read and spoken into our lives again and again. God’s Word exposes the devil’s lies and unmasks his schemes.

We need to study God’s Word, learn it, memorize it, and write it on our hearts and minds. In doing so, we are shown the emptiness of the accusations the devil hurls against us and are reminded that our confidence rests not in ourselves, but in Christ’s finished victory for us.

Prayer: Father, you are victorious; the devil holds no power.  Protect me from the devil’s lies and schemes.  Inscribe Your word upon my heart and mind.  Amen.
