A Weight We Cannot Bear

Lent 2026

Read Luke 11:37-54

Jesus speaks with sharp anger toward the Pharisees and religious lawyers. His words expose how deeply they are bound to self-justifying standards of righteousness. They are so focused on appearing right before God that they not only fail to enter God’s kingdom themselves, but also place obstacles in the way of others.

This is not only a problem of the past. The same pattern appears today when “Christian experts” use the Bible, faith, or even Jesus Himself to promote standards of righteousness that ultimately elevate and justify themselves. These standards can give the illusion of clarity—making it seem easy to identify who has it together and who does not. But in reality, they cloud the need for repentance and obscure the Gospel. Instead of freedom, they burden people with guilt, shame, and a burden of righteousness that no human can bear—other than Christ, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

When faith is reduced to outward appearances or performance, it loses sight of Jesus’ true work and heart: calling sinners to Himself for life, salvation, and restoration. Yet Jesus’ warning is not aimed only at certain misguided leaders. By nature, all of us are drawn toward self-justification. We are tempted to focus on what can be seen and measured while neglecting the deeper problem of sin within.

Jesus’ words here are stark, which can make the danger seem obvious. Yet in daily life it is often subtle. Even good intentions can pull us toward a righteousness that depends on ourselves rather than on Christ. That is why we are continually called to faith—faith that listens to the Gospel, searches God’s Word, and clings to His promises. In doing so, we are not led astray by false righteousness or weighed down by false burdens, but are instead grounded in God’s redeeming work for us in Jesus.

Prayer: Father, grant me honesty to examine my life and confess my sin. Strengthen my faith to trust firmly in Your Word of forgiveness. Remove the weariness of guilt from my spirit, and restore to me the joy of Your salvation; through Jesus Christ, my Lord. Amen.
