Newest Masters of Arts Program Launched at Concordia University Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. (November 20, 2015) – Students at Concordia University Irvine (CUI) will now have the opportunity to study abroad and on a continent with some of the world’s fastest growing economies, Africa. CUI is one of the only American universities to offer a field-based Master of Arts in International Studies (MAIS) degree in Africa.

Dr. Akosua Adomako Ampofo, Concordia University Irvine’s first Fulbright Scholar, gives the inaugural lecture at the university’s newly launched Master of Arts in International Studies: Africa degree program at the university in November. The activist-scholar was most recently director of the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ghana in Legon.

Launched in November with an inaugural lecture on campus, the global program introduces students to economic, social, cultural, and educational aspects that are shaping one of the world’s fastest growing economies according to Forbes Magazine. Students begin their studies on CUI’s campus in Irvine, followed by two semesters in Accra, the capital of Ghana, culminating in a master’s thesis and internship.

To launch the program, Visiting Senior Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Dr. Akosua Adomako Ampofo gave the inaugural lecture at the university in November. The university’s first Fulbright Scholar, who describes herself as an “activist-scholar” was most recently director of the Institute of African Studies at the University of Ghana in Legon. She will serve as an advisor and professor of African Studies in the MAIS Africa program.

“The MAIS Africa program builds on Concordia’s founding principle to encourage students to understand and engage in diverse, international environments,” said MAIS Africa Executive Director Salim Faraji. “The intent is for our students to make a positive impact on a global scale.” Concordia has offered a highly-successful MAIS China program for over a decade.
