Study Abroad for Parents & Families

Supporting Your Student’s Global Experience

Studying abroad is one of the most transformative experiences of a college education. Students return with greater independence, confidence, adaptability, and a broader understanding of the world. The Moon International Center partners with students and families throughout the study abroad process, from program selection and preparation to support while abroad and returning home.

The Moon International Center supports study abroad students throughout the entire study abroad journey, serving as the central support as they navigate requirements and expectations of their study abroad program provider, host institution, and host country.

  • One-on-one advising to select a program aligned with academic goals
  • Pre-departure coursework and orientation covering academics, travel preparation, and being a good global guest
  • Guidance through applications and required pre-departure steps
  • Budget planning, stress management, and cultural adjustment preparation
  • Coffee hour with study abroad alumni
  • Emergency assistance resources and support when unexpected situations arise
  • Communication and safety resources through Concordia and program partners
  • Support navigating coursework questions or changes during the program
  • Regular communication and check-ins throughout the program
  • Transcript support and follow-up for a smooth return to Concordia
  • Welcome Back Dinner to reconnect with fellow study abroad students
  • Individual debrief at the start of the semester to reflect on the experience
  • Opportunities to share stories through events, social media, and coffee hours

The best study abroad experiences happen when students take ownership of the process. Parents can support their student by:

  • Encouraging early planning
  • Helping discuss budgeting and finances
  • Reviewing travel documents and preparation requirements
  • Supporting independence and problem-solving skills

Your student remains a Concordia University Irvine student while abroad. Federal privacy regulations limit the information the university can share with parents unless a FERPA authorization is provided.

The Moon International Center and program partners have processes in place to support students during emergencies.
