Lutheran Teaching Alumnus Profile: Stephen Puls
As a student at Concordia University Irvine you have access to some of the greatest minds in their fields. Each faculty member could be teaching somewhere else, but they choose to be part of this community, and their commitment shows in the passion they have in the classroom, in the relationships they have with each other and in the relationships they develop with students.
One of the things I loved most about my coursework was the intentional integration of disciplines that Concordia offers. It’s not unusual to have a Science and Theology professor teaching side by side. It really is mind blowing when you are able to see the bigger picture…to see how God’s creation works perfectly alongside scientific knowledge, or any subject knowledge for that matter.
My professors were more than teachers; they quickly became mentors and friends. Beyond assignments and grades, each one was genuinely interested in helping me cultivate a deeper relationship with Christ and to develop a vision for my life that utilizes the unique gifts God has given me.
That’s my goal as a history teacher today. I want to give my students an arsenal of ideas to explore. In the process, I pray God opens their eyes and calls them to something big – something they never dreamed possible.

One piece of advice that I would give students who are interested in Concordia University Irvine is to get ready to play your part in the Great Commission. Because regardless of what profession you choose, you’ll be challenged to make a difference in the world for Christ.
