God With Us Forever

Advent 2025

I am with you always, to the end of the age. – Matthew 28:20

Advent looks both backward and forward. We look back to the first coming of Christ in Bethlehem, and we look forward to his second coming in glory. But we also remember something just as important: He is with us now. Emmanuel is not only a name we remember at Christmas—it is a promise for every day of our lives.

After his resurrection, Jesus gave his disciples a mission: to go and make disciples of all nations. He didn’t send them out alone but ended with this promise: “I am with you always, to the end of the age.” That same promise holds true for us. In our joys and in our struggles, in our daily routines and in our extraordinary challenges, Christ is present. He is with us in his word, guiding and strengthening us. He is with us in the sacraments, forgiving and renewing us. He is with us through his Spirit, comforting and empowering us.

Sometimes it may not feel that way. We may wonder if God is near at all. Advent reminds us that our assurance is not in our feelings but in God’s promises. Emmanuel means that whether or not we sense his presence, he is there. Nothing—not hardship, not loss, not even death—can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:38–39).

This truth also gives us confidence as we look to the future. The same Jesus who came once in humility will come again in glory. On that day, every tear will be wiped away. Every wrong will be made right. Every promise will be fulfilled. Until then, we live in the “already” and the “not yet”—Christ is with us now, and one day we will see him face-to-face.

As Advent concludes and Christmas arrives, let Emmanuel be more than a seasonal word. Let it be your daily reality. God with us in the past. God with us now. God with us forever.

Prayer: Jesus, Emmanuel, thank you for your never-ending presence. Keep me in faith until the day I see you face to face. Amen.
