Q&A with Katherine

What do you like to do with your free time?
When I have a free day, I like exploring Orange County and writing about my adventures. I call them my “writerly days” and usually bring a journal and a friend along. Orange County is full of inspiration, whether it's a day wandering around Disneyland, an evening concert at Segerstrom Hall, or a trek to Laguna Beach.

What is your favorite place to eat around campus?
Bruxie! They serve the best waffle sandwiches/desserts ever and it's just a short drive from campus. I was first introduced to this wonderful place while I was a student at Concordia. Now that I live here, I make it a point to get Bruxie for special occasions. It's a wonderful place for newcomers to Orange County.

What do you love about CUI?
There is much I love about CUI. The view from Good Shepherd Chapel, the CU Center pipe organ, "good morning" from the professors and students, breakfast burritos, s'mores and hot chocolate before SHOUT (one of our chapel services), the annual Christmas concerts, memories of late night study sessions with friends . . . as an alumni what I love most about CUI is that every time I set foot on campus, I feel like I'm coming home.

What advice do you have for students going through the admissions process?
Lots of papers, forms, and little details come with the territory of college admissions. It can be a long process, but it's worth it. Remind yourself of your goals and plans for college. Be patient with the process and with yourself. Explore your options and ask lots of questions.

What is the greatest lesson that you have learned in college?
I learned how to ask questions. That might seem odd, considering that it's something kids learn at an early age. But during my high school years I was so focused on getting answers. Isn't that what we're taught? 2+2 is 4. The earth is made up of 71% water, 29% land. The right answers get good grades and teacher approval. College showed me the importance of asking questions, even when answers don't follow, because this is where true learning takes place.
