Concordia University Irvine Features Art Exhibition, Overflow

Overflow by Rachel Leising Soo    Eruption by Rachel Leising Soo

Irvine, Calif. — On Wednesday, November 6th, artist Rachel Leising Soo will present on her watercolor mixed media paintings featured in the new art exhibition titled OverflowThe reception and lecture will be held at 6:00 p.m. in the John and Linda Friend art gallery in Concordia University Irvine’s Grimm Hall.

Overflow art exhibition will be in the gallery through December 4th and involves watercolor mixed media paintings that were produced by examining her memories, perceptions and personal relationships. Soo’s examination was a ‘visceral and instinctive experience’ shaped by recent travels and significant life altering events. Soo’s favorite pieces are entitled Overflow and Eruption, shown here.

“The origin of this series of paintings can be traced to a daily artist’s journal,” Soo recounts in her artist statement. “I experimented with watercolor washes, and drawing with ink, colored pencil or charcoal. A few of these images led me to begin an exploration of a similar style and a combination of media on a larger scale. I allowed specific personal events or emotions to guide my color selections, forms and strokes.”

Soo further outlined her techniques stating, “I responded to these initial watercolor forms by segmenting the painting. The last step included drawing with ink to manipulate the composition. White/negative spaces were used to affect the balance of the paintings, as these areas act as major forms within the compositions."

“We are delighted to be able to exhibit Professor Soo's intriguing watercolors in our gallery on campus,” explains curator, Niclas Kruger. “They show a side of Professor Soo's versatile creativity in addition to her specialized field digital media on the computer.”
