Concordia University Irvine receives VA Work-Study Grant

Federal grant to offer job opportunities to veterans enrolled at the private university

IRVINE, Calif. (Sept. 7, 2016)— Concordia University Irvine (CUI) recently received a federal grant from the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) to provide paid work-study hours for veterans and their spouse/child dependent students under the GI Bill ® enrolled at the university. The grant marks the first time the Veterans Resource Center at CUI (est. 2014) has applied and received such funding.

“This grant is significant for our veteran population,” said Veterans Resource Center Manager at CUI Steve Leader, and Army veteran. “Students using the GI Bill ®—and many are veterans with families—will now be able to earn a paycheck on campus. By hiring veterans and their dependents, we’re working to build a community for them here at Concordia.” Leader hopes to hire two to three CUI students.

The work-study positions, paid for by the VA, are designed to only serve the veteran population at Concordia University Irvine. The VA promotes that “you can earn while you learn” to any students within that population who meet the work-study eligibility.

Similar to the Cal Grant, qualified recipients of the GI Bill ® can earn a degree at the institution of their choice and receive federal funding for their education from the VA.

Less than two percent of Concordia University Irvine’s student population is made up of veterans in undergraduate, graduate, and Ed.D programs. The federal grant has awarded both public and private institutions such as UCLA, Loyola Marymount University, and UCI with similar work-study positions for veterans. With this new grant, CUI can promote the program when recruiting veterans as prospective students.
