Partnership makes Concordia first West Coast university to offer Townsend's Character-Plus-Competency Model

IRVINE, Calif. (July 20, 2016)— Concordia University Irvine (CUI) today announced a partnership with New York Times best-selling author, leadership coach, and Newport Beach-based speaker John Townsend, Ph.D., to launch the Townsend Institute for Leadership and Counseling (TILC) at the private university. The Townsend Institute and CUI are currently working on plans to develop and offer master’s and certificate programs online.

Known for its character-plus-competency model which emphasizes the importance of competence (interpersonal skill sets) and character (internal capacities to meet the demands of reality) in leadership roles, the Townsend Institute will be part of the School of Professional Studies at Concordia University Irvine. Formerly located at Huntington University in Indiana, the Townsend Institute will now be located at Concordia University Irvine in Southern California where John Townsend is based.

John Townsend—who has written 30 books including the best-selling Boundaries series—has been helping organizations and individuals to achieve success for more than 20 years. He co-hosts a national-syndicated radio program, New Life Live and has sold more than eight million books, including the best-selling Boundaries: When to Say Yes, How to Say No to Take Control of your Life, which became a series. Prior to earning his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the Rosemeade School of Psychology at Biola University and a master's degree in theology from Dallas Theological Seminary, he earned his bachelor's degree with honors in psychology from North Carolina State University.
