IRVINE, CA - (November 6, 2014) - Concordia will be 'all about that bass' on Sunday, November 16 at 3:00 PM in the CU Center. CUI’s epic Battle of the Basses features a tuba concerto and a double bass concerto. The lively tuba and double bass, who rarely get solo roles, will be joined by a student organist throughout the powerful performance.
Along with performers Dr. David Holben on the tuba and Dr. Matthew Hare on the double bass, the Concordia Wind Orchestra and Sinfonietta will display the musical prowess Concordia is known for.
“The music programmed by Dr. Jeff Held for Battle of the Basses will carry the listener on a musical journey,” said Karissa Lystrup ’15. Lystrup will be the organ soloist in the concert. Lystrup describes the concert as the culmination of her undergraduate experience. She said, “I am excited for the opportunity to perform outstanding repertoire for organ and wind band, which is not heard often. This concert offers great variety, ranging from bombastic brass and organ to subtle string bass with orchestra.”
The bass instruments come alive in the two works by the innovative composer Percy Grainger. For his pieces in the concert, the two orchestras will combine with the organist in the way Grainger originally intended. “From the exuberant opening Grand Cheour Dialogue to the dark and haunting lines of Grainger's The Power of Rome and the Christian Heart, this concert will appeal to a variety of listeners,” concluded Lystrup.
Dr. Matthew Hare, whose playful performance on the double bass will excite the audience’s imaginations, is a prolific educator and performer. He currently teaches at University of California Irvine, Concordia University Irvine and Saddleback College. Dr. Hare freelances with many ensembles, including the Sand Diego and San Bernardino Symphonies. This concert gives the valued educator a chance to share his talents outside of the classroom.
“It is a rush to hear big sounds like this,” said Dr. Held, conductor of the concert. “Instrumental music, played as well as the college students play, can be very moving and memorable.”
Tickets for Battle of the Basses are $10 general admission, $8 for seniors and free for students. They are available here.
