Under Kevin’s leadership, CUI won the 2013 NPDA National Tournament Sweepstakes Championship and placed second in 2014. Kevin is also a member of the Department of Communication Studies where he teaches a number of communication courses.
Yaw Kyeremateng – Director of Individual Events
Originally from Ghana, Yaw (prounced Yeow) earned a BA in Environmental Health Science and an MA in Communication, both from the University of Northern Iowa. As a competitor, he was exceptionally successful, especially in his senior year. He advanced all 6 of his events to elimination rounds at the HFO Swing, placing 3 of those into finals. Additionally he qualified six events to the AFA-NIET, advancing two of them (POI and DUO) to semifinals, placed 2nd in Poetry, and earned 11th place in Individual Sweepstakes.
Yaw is passionate about helping students find their utmost passion within their respective speech topics and events. "Public speaking is a subject of great trepidation and uncertainty for many people. My zeal for the craft also urges me to assist students to overcome that fear and worry."
Angelica Grigsby – Assistant Director of Individual Events
After two successful years of competition at Solano Community College, Angelica competed for Concordia the past two years where she won tournaments in every type of event that she competed. She qualified 4 events in her junior year and senior year at Concordia to both the AFA-NIET and the NFA National Tournament. Angelica was also part of the 2013 team at NPDA that captured the National Tournament sweepstakes championship. A 2014 graduate of Concordia University, she works closely with Yaw to mold and shape each of the individual events into regionally and nationally competitive events.
David “Bear” Saulet – Assistant Director of Debate
Bear (as he prefers to be called) competed very successfully for two years at El Camino College before transferring to Concordia. He and his partner broke new ground for Concordia, winning multiple regional and national-circuit tournaments, earning the #2 spot in the 2013 NPTE rankings as well as reaching the Octofinal (2013) and Quarterfinal (2012) rounds of the NPDA National Tournament. Bear’s substantial knowledge of non-traditional debate methods and arguments prepares debate competitors to compete and win regional and national circuit tournaments. Working closely with Kevin, Bear is part of one of the best coaching staffs in NPDA/NPTE debate. Together, he and Kevin make CUI debate one of the premiere debate programs in the nation.
