Student Health Insurance Program for 2013-2014
Concordia University, Irvine (CUI) has adopted a mandatory student health
insurance policy. All full-time undergraduate students and international
(graduate & undergraduate)
students are automatically enrolled in the Concordia University Irvine Student Health
Insurance Plan (the CUI SHIP). Our mandatory student health insurance
limits the undue financial and academic stress related to illnesses that
may be suffered by students during the academic year. It is our belief that
an adequate health policy will assist in meeting not only common illnesses
treated at the student Wellness Center or at a private physician's office,
but also with the financial burden of illness and accidents involving more
Students who already have health insurance (through their own or parents) may
be permitted by the University to waive out of the CUI SHIP but only if
their insurance plan meets the waiver criteria enumerated below. CUI
students who wish to waive out of the CUI SHIP must submit an electronic
Health Insurance Waiver annually, otherwise they will automatically be
enrolled in the CUI SHIP and the insurance premium will be billed to their
While all traditional undergraduate students on the main campus are
automatically enrolled in the CUI SHIP, graduate students (except for
international students) are not automatically enrolled; however, they are
encouraged to carry health insurance. Nursing students are required by
their program to carry health insurance as well. As an option, they are
eligible to enroll in the CUI SHIP.

Fall 2013 Students
The Concordia University Irvine SHIP costs $1,698 for annual coverage from August 1, 2013 to July 31, 2014. This amount will be billed to your student account unless you submit a waiver by August 31, 2013.
Spring 2014 Students
This plan is only for new students starting in the Spring semester. The Concordia University Irvine SHIP costs $986 for spring/summer coverage from January 1, 2014 to July 31, 2014. This amount will automatically be billed to the student's account. For new freshmen and transfers in the 2014 Spring Semester, you will have to waive out or enroll once again in the 2014 Fall Semester.
International students are automatically billed the health insurance premium. However, you may appeal this only if you meet either of these conditions:
- Your U.S.-based plan is provided by your sponsor (Saudi students) or
- Your U.S.-based plan is provided by your parent’s/spouse’s U.S. employer
Submitting a Health Insurance Waiver
The following criteria must be met by the Student’s insurance plan in order to waive out of the CUI SHIP. If the Student’s plan does not meet the criteria, the student will be automatically enrolled in the CUI SHIP.
- The student’s plan must be owned, headquartered and operated in the U.S.
- The plan must provide primary care services within 50 miles of Concordia University, Irvine.
- The plan must pay for hospitalization in the U.S.
- The plan must cover inpatient and outpatient mental health in the U.S.
- The maximum annual benefit must be at least $500,000.
- The coverage must remain in effect throughout the 2014-2015 academic year.
If a new Spring transfer student has his/her own coverage, an online
Health Insurance Waiver needs to be completed anytime between December 9, 2013 and January 31, 2014 waive out of the CUI Student Health Insurance Plan.
The Health Insurance Waiver will not be accepted after the January 31, 2014 deadline. Students who do not submit a Health Insurance Waiver will automatically be enrolled in the Concordia University Irvine Student Health Insurance Plan.

The new HealthCare Reform regulation requires that all potential insured members are notified of the availability of the health insurance plan Summary of Benefits and Coverage (SBC) document. The purpose of the document is to make it easier for you to read and understand the insurance benefits made available to you in a simplified document that is standard across all insurance companies. You may obtain a copy of your SBC on the student insurance website at: www.aetnastudenthealth.com. To Locate the SBC please follow the directions below:
- Click on “Find My School’s Plan”
- Enter your school name in “School/Association Name”
- The SBC will be located under Policy Information

Health insurance is not needed for care received from the Health Center.
We recommend that all students understand their insurance availability within Orange County. There are many types of insurance policies and it is the student's responsibility to understand their coverage. The student handles all health insurance matters directly with their insurance company for off-campus medical care.
Each student is legally responsible for payment of all fees for medical and mental health expenses incurred for the academic year at Concordia University, Irvine.
