Single Subject Teaching Credential Program

Credential Program Outcomes

The teacher candidate plans and delivers instruction. The teacher candidate plans and delivers engaging, developmentally appropriate instruction based on the California Content Standards. The teacher candidate incorporates a variety of teaching strategies and resources to make the subject matter accessible and engaging to the needs of diverse students.

The teacher candidate uses assessment for a variety of purposes. The teacher candidate designs and interprets a variety of assessments, and also uses assessment data to plan instruction, monitor instruction, design and monitor the classroom environment, learn about and place students. In addition the teacher candidate uses reflective practice as a means of self assessment.

The teacher candidate provides a supportive learning environment. The teacher candidate creates a positive social environment and a safe and welcoming physical environment that supports learning for all students. The teacher candidate uses instructional time wisely and efficiently.

The teacher candidate models a servant-leadership lifestyle. The teacher candidate models servant-leadership, exhibits a professional attitude and communicates effectively with students, families and school personnel. The teacher candidate is aware of and carries out legal and ethical responsibilities.


California Preliminary Credential/English Learner – Single Subject

The single subject credential is for teachers who desire to teach one subject to groups of students at the high school or middle school levels. The single subject credential areas Concordia offers are:

  • Art
  • Science-Chemistry
  • English
  • Foundational Science
  • Science-Geosciences
  • Science-Biology
  • Music
  • Social Science
  • Foundational Math
  • Science-Physics
  • Physical Education
  • Mathematics
  • Foreign Language (case by case basis)

Required: 34 semester hours for Single Subject Credential


Single Subject Credential Coursework

Semester 1 (13 units)

  • EDUC 201 Introduction to Teaching Careers (Includes 15 hours classroom observation/participation) - 1 unit
  • EDUC 301 Psychology Diverse Learners - 3 units
  • EDUC 501 Instructional Planning and Assessments - 3 units
  • EDUC 502 Creating a Positive Learning Environment - 3 units
  • EDUC 551 Language and Culture - 3 units

Semester 2 (9 units)

Successful completion of Edu 201, 301 and 501 is a prerequisite for the courses below.

  • EDUC 524 Secondary Curriculum and Methods - 4 units
  • EDUC 570 Content Area Literacy Instruction in Secondary Classrooms - 4 units
  • EDUC 581 Student Teaching I: TPA Practicum (includes 30 hours classroom observation/participation) - 1 unit

Semester 3 (12 units): Student Teaching Semester

Student teaching is fulltime teaching for a semester under the supervision of a cooperating teacher and university supervisor. Single subject student teachers are placed in high schools or middle schools where they will teach several different courses in their content areas.
