Kresge Challenge Grant
The Kresge Foundation of Troy, Michigan, has notified President Jack Preus that Concordia University will receive a $1 million grant if we raise the balance needed for the construction of the $22 million Robert Alan Grimm Hall, formerly known as the Education, Business & Technology (EBT) Center, by September 1, 2007. The EBT Center, currently under construction, is a three-story, state-of-the-art facility ($20 million to construct and equip and $2 million to endow). When completed in February 2007, Grimm Hall will offer classrooms, study areas, a 215-seat auditorium, a 60-seat conference room and computer labs for the university's 2,300 students. This is the high tech teaching and learning facility we have needed and prayed about for years, and now is the time. It's a big challenge, but together we can do it!
WHAT IS A KRESGE CHALLENGE GRANT?
It is the assurance of specific funding from The Kresge Foundation for a specific capital project (Grimm Hall) if Concordia University raises the required amount of funding ($22 million) in new gifts and grants within an agreed-upon time limit, which is September 2006 to September 2007.
WHY DOES THE KRESGE FOUNDATION MAKE CHALLENGE GRANTS?
The Kresge Foundation has chosen the challenge grant approach to grant-making in order to help institutions enhance their fundraising capabilities. In other words, the Foundation wants Concordia University to be able to attract additional donors for Grimm Hall through the Challenge Grant, but they also want to strengthen the university.
WHY IS A KRESGE CHALLENGE GRANT SO SIGNIFICANT?
The Kresge Foundation is one of America's premier foundations and is one of the foremost supporters of independent higher education. It is well known for its rigorous standards as well as its commitment to building "institutional capacity." The Kresge Foundation selects its grant recipients very carefully. In a given year, approximately 25 percent of the proposals submitted were funded (142 out of 551). In 2005, the Foundation has awarded 217 grants, and this year, Concordia University is proud to be a recipient of its first Kresge Challenge Grant. This is a prestigious achievement!
WHAT SPECIFICALLY MUST Concordia DO TO RECEIVE THE $1 MILLION GRANT?
To receive the $1 million challenge grant, Concordia must raise the $21 million needed to construct, equip and endow Grimm Hall by September 1, 2007. Once achieved, The Kresge Foundation will send Concordia University a check for the last $1 million necessary to achieve the goal. Grimm Hall is one of our largest building projects ever and has a very ambitious funding goal. As of September 15, 2006, we have been blessed to receive gifts and pledges totaling $18.7 million from 161 donors. This total does not include the $1 million Challenge Grant from the prestigious Kresge Foundation.

HOW CAN YOU HELP Concordia TO ACHIEVE THE $1 MILLION DOLLAR Grant?
We're glad you asked!! Every new gift and pledge, however small or large, from an individual, family, corporation, foundation, church or organization will count toward meeting the challenge. Gifts can be pledged and paid over a three to five year period. The total pledge amount will count toward the Kresge Challenge Grant.
