Student Spotlights

CUI students talk about the Teacher Education program

Kelly Botich '03

My favorite education professor is Margarita Jimenez-Silva because she is down-to-earth, funny, extremely intelligent and knowledgeable and organized. She offered so many ideas for how to teach English language learners and I looked forward to attending her class.

Amy Gray '03

Concordia is a quality institution with a personal flair. Because class sizes are small, professors get to know each and every one of their students. The curriculum is tough but practical and students know they will use what they've learned in their own classrooms someday.

Jody McInerney '03

I really enjoyed the Educational Psychology class. I just found the subject material really interesting and I thought the textbook was excellent. Professor Jimenez-Silva really impressed me with her knowledge and experience. The class has made me consider pursuing an advanced degree in Educational Psych. I have found the attitude of every person I have dealt with at Concordia, both faculty and staff, to be encouraging and helpful.

Rachel Sievers '02

There is an amazing staff in the Education Department at Concordia. The teachers I’ve had are geniuses in their fields and wonderful at passing on their knowledge. No wonder schools come to Concordia looking for new teachers.

Shannon Regenhardt '04

The dedication of the faculty and staff to Concordia definitely makes it unique. Throughout my three years, I feel that I have bonded with my professors and with the staff that I've worked with. From the Career Development Center to New Student Programs, Concordia does what it can to make the most out of each student's education outside of the classroom. The academic advisors have made my four years easy to plan out by providing me with my four year course plan before I even started classes my freshman year. In fact, they figured out a way for me to double major AND get my Elementary Education Master's Degree in 4.5 years... not an easy feat!

Sara Gonzales '06

The ability to tie in Christianity in every aspect of history is the most interesting and encouraging for me. The teachers REALLY know what they are talking about, both historically and theologically. The small class sizes, individual attention, and the ability to get access the teachers' voice mail, offices, or campus mail make the teachers seem like they are genuinely interested in the education of their students. They are the kind of teachers that I want to be once my education at Concordia is over and my teaching career begins.

Melissa Morrow '02

All of my professors have been encouraging, professional and personal. CU has developed the reputation among OC school districts for educating teachers to meet high expectations of classroom management, curriculum preparation and educational standards integration.

Nicole Matthews '01

Dr. Schlichtemeier's passion for education is obvious through his teaching and he makes me want to model my teaching style after his. His preparation for class is apparent and all of his expectations leave no question, and there are a lot of them, but as a student, I found myself wanting to meet and exceed every one of them.

Maida Garcia '05

Dr. Margarita Jimenez-Silva is one of my favorite professors. She contributed to my firm understanding of what it takes to be an effective teacher. She gave me a better understanding of why some students act as they do. She has also been a great mentor and a personal inspiration of what it takes to make it as a Latina professional.

Allison Carey '03

When I visited this campus, God was totally speaking to me saying, "You need to be here." It was very cool. In chapel, I looked around and no one was sitting alone and that made a big impression on me. People looking out for each other. That's really neat, somewhere I want to be. CU is giving me the skills I need, with a passion for Christ.
