Emma Mathes ’24
Major: Liberal Studies
Minors: Worship Arts Leadership, Global Cultural Studies

I want to become a teacher because of the many great teachers I’ve had throughout my life. It is my way of giving back. I have been involved in music and church since the 6th grade by singing in the praise band, helping with Vacation Bible School, and tutoring kids at my home church, Faith Community Lutheran Church in Las Vegas.

Concordia’s program teaches both theoretical and practical success with a ministry mindset.

I feel more equipped each year. The leadership opportunities at Concordia have allowed me to develop stronger leadership skills and a servant leadership mentality. I am able to work collaboratively and with accountability – all skills that will be applicable to a career in teaching.

EMMA’S ADVICE:

If you feel a calling, even a slight whisper, you should lean into it. God works through the ordinary. If you are considering becoming a called minister of the faith, spend a lot of time in prayer and know that God will accomplish His plan. Be connected to the Word and people in ministry who can help you navigate to where God is calling you.

EMMA’S FUN FACT:

I lived in Germany from Kindergarten through 2nd grade where I learned the language and attended a local school.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CONCORDIA EXPERIENCE?

The choir tour to Spain and Portugal. It was such a cool way to travel with friends and bring the gospel to a different country through music!

Lutheran Teaching Ministry: Elementary and Second Education

Concordia University Irvine’s Lutheran teaching program does more than just help students earned teaching credentials for elementary or secondary education. You are also equipped to be called, commissioned ministers of the Gospel in The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. While the majority of classes in the program are in education and specific academic content areas, Lutheran teachers are also equipped as teachers of the faith who serve their students not only academically but spiritually. They work within a team ministry environment, exploring the interaction of faith and learning, and truly caring for their students.
