Gala of Stars Reaches Record High
Supporters of this year’s annual black tie fundraiser, the Gala of Stars, on Saturday, April 27, donated $650,000 for student scholarships, a record high for this event! A total of 380 guests participated in a silent and live auction and enjoyed a gourmet dinner by Bon Appetit. The Golden ticket opportunity in the silent auction raised $10,000 and the winning number drawn chose two Signature Annual Passes to Disneyland. Lucky bidders in the live auction will enjoy tickets and a limo ride to the Carrie Underwood Concert in September at Staples Center and another lucky bidder will have a set of golf clubs designed for him by PGA professionals, compliments of Callaway and Travis Mathews.
This year’s Servant Leadership Award was presented to Craig Olson by University President Dr. Kurt Krueger. Olson has served as a member of Concordia University’s Board of Regents for more than ten years, serving as Board Chair and Vice Chair and Chair of the Board’s Finance and Audit Committee. He has also provided leadership at Salem Lutheran Church and School in Orange and served in various ways at Lutheran High School of Orange County.
Next year’s student body president, Isabella Upchurch ’20, thanked the audience for their support which has enabled her to pursue her education at Concordia University to become a special education teacher. Following her heartfelt message, almost $450,000 was donated by generous supporters.
Under the direction of Steve Young, the Gala of Stars concluded with a finale by students in Concordia’s Commercial Music program and student instrumentalists in the Sinfonietta performing popular songs throughout the decades, closing with “Let It Be” by the Beatles.
In appreciation, Gala Chair, Ruth DeNault of San Clemente, said “we are so grateful for the fabulous support of our friends, alumni and community, who are making it possible for young men and women to receive a Christian education that takes them out into the world as teachers, business professionals, nurses, pastors, scientists, musicians, and many other careers.”
