Commemorating the vision of our founding President, Rev. Dr. Charles Manske and the philanthropic generosity of Mike and Caryn ’85 Borland, Concordia University Irvine is pleased to announce the renaming of the Music, Worship & Theology Building to the Borland-Manske Center.
To maintain the high level of academic excellence that's expected from Concordia University Irvine, we must adapt our campus, improving it to meet the changing needs of today's educational environment.
In 2016, we celebrated 40 years of academic service. Today, we look with optimism toward our future. With a goal of $30 million, the Campaign for the Borland-Manske Center to affirm what has been central to our campus, and build the foundation for a bright future. Bringing Theology and Music to the heart of campus, the Borland-Manske Center underscores the important historical intersection of these two disciplines.
Culminating three years of planning, Concordia University Irvine's campus improvements will continue to build upon a master plan that is architecturally beautiful and educationally effective. From these classrooms, practice rooms, and halls, we will continue to send out graduates equipped for learning, service, and leadership.
One wing will house a dedicated Theology library, classrooms, and faculty offices for Christ College, Concordia University’s school of theology.
It’s important to us that the Borland-Manske Center serves not just our Music and Christ College students, but our entire campus. The space has been carefully designed to include welcoming, accessible entry points for our whole community, including a new courtyard and outdoor gathering spaces.
Classrooms will overlook the baseball field and French Hill and be in close proximity to the Library Arts Building, CU Center, Grimm Hall and CU Arena.
The Music Wing will feature larger, acoustically rich rehearsal halls for choral groups.
The Orchestra room will provide larger, acoustically rich rehearsal accommodations for instrumental groups.
Music, worship and theology intersect in the hearts of people, and now they will intersect in the heart of Concordia University Irvine’s campus. The two wings of the 38,500 sq ft Borland-Manske Center bring together the musical tradition and theological foundation of the Lutheran faith in a space that will serve the campus community and the Church worldwide spiritually, musically, and practically for decades to come.

I accord music the highest place next to theology.
- Martin Luther
The acoustical design of the music practice and performance rooms is being created by the WSDG Walters-Storyk Design Group, the firm that did the acoustics and audio system design for well-known clients like the Rio Olympics, Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City, the Berklee College of Music (Boston, MA), as well as The Church (UK), the famed recording studio where Adele recorded her latest album, and many other concert halls and music venues around the world.
The 38,500 square-foot Borland-Manske Center will have two wings with a connecting breezeway. The Center will be nestled between the Library Arts Building and the Baseball Field. In so doing, a new space is also being created between Library Arts and the Borland-Manske Center to honor the individual and collective contributions of Concordia's alumni. The Alumni Plaza will become a new hub of campus life and an exterior gathering location for students, staff, faculty, and alumni alike.
