A transfer student is an applicant who has enrolled and earned units at a community college or other postsecondary institution, prior to entering Concordia University Irvine (CUI). This does not include students who have attended college for the first time during the summer immediately prior to fall admission at CUI.

2. Official College Transcript(s)

Official transcript from each institution attended, covering all collegiate-level work under-taken during your absence from Concordia. Good standing at each institution is required. Official transcripts must be mailed directly from the college in a sealed envelope or hand-carried to the Admissions Office:

3. Official High School Transcript(s)

Official high school transcript (which indicates and verifies graduation) must be sent directly from the high school in a sealed envelope or hand-carried to the Admissions Office.

Note: CUI grants college credit for Credit by Exam Scores. Students may transfer in a maximum of 30 non-accredited credits by exam (AP, CLEP, DSST, IB, and/or military units).

Note: Applications received after April 1 are reviewed on a rolling basis, and it is recommended that students apply well in advance. Once your application is complete, it usually takes two weeks to receive an admissions decision, depending upon the time of year.

Admission Requirements

  • Cumulative college GPA of a 2.3 or higher
  • Graduated from a high school or earned a GED

Preparing to Transfer

Concordia University Irvine welcomes transfer students who have earned approved academic units at an accredited postsecondary institution and a minimum college GPA of 2.3.

In addition to meeting admission requirements, transfer students are encouraged to complete as many General Education (GE) and major requirements as possible prior to transfer.

Concordia General Education Prior to Transfer

Although the CUI GE requirement does not have to be completed prior to transfer, CUI accepts the following in place of most of the CUI general education requirements:

  • IGETC (Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum)
  • CSU (California State University General Education Breadth Requirements)
  • A.D.T (Associate Degree for Transfer)
  • A.A. (Associate of Arts) and A.S. (Associate of Science) degrees that meet the CSU General Education Breadth Requirements
  • Oregon and Washington's Direct Transfer Associate degree (DTA); comparable transfer certifications from other states can be considered on a case by case basis

Note: The above certifications satisfy the General Education requirements at Concordia with the exception of the Enduring Questions & Ideas (Q&I) Core and Theology course requirements. All transfer students must take one general education course in theology for each year of attendance at Concordia. See Enduring Questions & Ideas (Q&I) Core requirements for transfer students.

Major Requirements Prior to Transfer

Although major specific courses are not required for admission to any major at Concordia, completing major requirements prior transfer may:

  • Allow completion of prerequisite major courses
  • Provide continuity with upper division courses in your major
  • Shorten the time to earn a degree and/or provide time to explore other academic options

Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT)

Students transferring from a California Community College with an ADT will be guaranteed a transfer pathway that ensures:

  • Admission
  • At least 60 transferable semester units*
  • Junior standing (with at least 60 transferable semester units)*
  • Academic major preparation
  • Timely progress toward degree completion

CUI accepts the following ADT's:

  • Biology
  • Business Administration
  • Chemistry
  • Communication Studies
  • Elementary Teacher Education
  • Economics
  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Psychology
  • Studio Art
  • Theatre Arts

Other Considerations

  • 120 semester units are required for graduation
  • 30 semester units must be completed at CUI (18 of the last 24 units must be completed at CUI)
  • 30 semester units of upper-division coursework are required for graduation of which 21 units must be completed at CUI
  • 18 units in the student's major and 9 units in the minor must be completed at CUI
  • Graduation Requirements

*A total of ninety (90) semester units are allowed for transfer students, of which a maximum of seventy (70) semester units may be transferred from a regionally accredited community college. Additionally, within the 90 and 70 semester units, only 30 non-accredited, credit by exam (AP, CLEP, DSST, IB), and/or military units may be transferred. Concordia will accept grades of C- or better towards Q&I general education or elective credit. Only grades of C or better may be applied towards a major, minor, or to fulfill program requirements for graduation. Courses with grades below a C- are not accepted in transfer.

CUI has articulation agreements with several California Community Colleges specifying how coursework taken at California Community Colleges will satisfy CUI major requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I apply as a first year or transfer student?

A transfer student is someone who has enrolled and earned units at a postsecondary institution prior to entering CUI. This does not include students who have attended college for the first time during the summer immediately prior to fall admission at CUI. If you completed units the summer after graduating high school, you will need to apply as a first year student.

Are there required courses that I need to complete before transferring?

There are no pre-requisite courses prior to applying to CUI.

What if I do not see an articulation agreement for the school I am attending?

Contact your admissions counselor. We can still give you information on what units transfer to CUI.

How can I set up an appointment to speak to someone about transferring?

Please contact your admissions counselor.

What types of scholarships can I receive as a transfer student?

Transfer scholarships are available to students who have a cumulative college GPA of at least a 2.9. Please view the Financial Aid Scholarships page for more information.

Do I need to complete the SAT/ACT?

If you are applying as a transfer student, you do not need to submit any test scores, regardless of your amount of units.

How do I select classes that will transfer to CUI?

How do I know if my units will transfer?

Upon admission to the university you will receive a preliminary transfer credit evaluation. If you would like to request an evaluation prior to acceptance, please contact your admissions counselor.

Is there a minimum amount of units required prior to transferring?

CUI does not require a minimum amount of units before transferring.

Am I required to take religion courses?

Transfer students at CUI will complete one theology course per year. Please see Q&I page for more information.
