CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY IRVINE STUDENTS HONORED FOR RESEARCH WORK

Fighting Cancer to Cut DNA as well as animalrights part of entries at 12th Annual Research Competition

 

IRVINE, Calif., (April 24, 2015)Concordia University Irvine (CUI) recently announced winners of the 12th Annual President’s Academic Showcase, a campus-wide research competition that challenges students across various majors to conceive and investigate a research topic and present their findings. Students work one-on-one with a faculty mentor to complete a full-scale undergraduate research project selected from any discipline and present a research paper,an academic poster and an oral presentation.

                The competition provides undergraduate students the opportunity to develop graduate-level research skills. A panel of faculty, selected from across Concordia’s disciplines, serves as judges for the showcase and evaluates projects on use of literature, choice of methodology and discussion of results and implications.

Winners and runners-up of the Tier-One competition, for upperclassmen are:

·        First place: Grace Chong and Rafael Ramos for their winning research onCutting DNA to Fight Cancer: Investigating in vitro the Photoactive Properties of Tris (2,2’-bipyridyl) dichlororuthenium (II) Hexahydrate and Characterizing in vivoits Effects on the Survival of Wild Type and Mismatch Repair-Deficient Yeast” (faculty mentor: Dr. Lindsay Kane-Barnese,Biology and Chemistry, and Dr. John Kenney, Chemistry and Chemical Sciences)

·        Second place: Cecilia Eiroa Lledo forPotential nuclear waste recycling process using Deinococcus radioduran” (faculty mentor: Dr. Lindsay Kane-Barnese, Biology and Chemistry, Dr. Inga Kenney,Chemistry, and Dr. John Kenney, Chemistry and Chemical Sciences)

·        Third place: Amanda Ozaki forThe Death of King Abdullah: Saudi Arabian Monarchy in an Increasingly Unstable Middle East” (faculty mentor: Dr. Daniel van Voorhis, History)

·        Honorable Mention: Katelyn Carbiener for “A Theological Case for Non-Reductionistic Therapy: Fallacies in Christian Care Paradigms and Distinctions for Healing in Light of Man’s Totality” (faculty mentor: Dr. David Loy, Philosophy and Theology)

·        Honorable Mention: Kelsey Swerdfeger for “Solving Linear Systems of Equations with Macaulay2” (faculty sponsor: Dr. Amanda Croll, Mathematics)

Honorees of the Tier-Two competition, for freshmen and sophomores are:

·        First place: Daniel Welchons for his research on “The German Quest for Identity 1870-1914” (faculty mentor: Dr. Daniel van Voorhis, History)

·        Second place: Elise Logan for The Effects of Parental Incarceration on Children” (faculty mentor: Dr. Roberto Flores de Apodaca, Psychology)

·        Third place: Caleb Speakman for “A New Approach to Animal Rights” (faculty mentor: Professor Thea Gavin, English)

Winners share a $5000 cash award, while some will be invited to represent CUI by presenting their research at an inter-collegiate undergraduate research conference in Fall 2015.
