Concordia University Irvine’s Doctorate of Education Gains WASC Approval

Ed.D.

Irvine, Calif. (August 19, 2013)— With program approval from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) Commission, the School of Education at Concordia University Irvine announced the offering of its Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree in Educational Leadership. The Ed.D. degree is an applied learning doctorate designed to equip students with a deep understanding of management and leadership skills necessary to transform American education.

“The goal of our program is to develop transformative leaders who embody the knowledge, character, and skills to guide dynamic and diverse learning organizations in the 21st century,” said Dwight Doering, Executive Director of the Doctor of Education Program.

The doctoral program is intended for candidates who are interested in leadership positions in Pre K-12 public or private education, professorships in schools of education, or administrative leadership positions in institutions of higher education. Its first cohort group will begin coursework in January 2014.

The Ed.D. curriculum is designed to allow students to experience success in steps and to feel confident in their abilities and skills as they progress through the program. The idea is that once students have achieved success, they exhibit increased confidence to tackle increasingly difficult concepts, methods and skills. With mastery of each successive step, students undertake new challenges that require mastery of research and skills, which lead toward conducting and completing dissertation research.

Program Features:

  • Accommodative learning environment
  • High contact with faculty
  • Focused 3-year path to graduation
  • Streamlined dissertation tract
  • Cohort membership
  • Small cohort size and groupings
  • Rigorous and integrated curriculum
  • Scholarly research
  • Ethical leadership
  • Educational trips (Washington, DC; People’s Republic of China)
  • Competitive cost

The program will host information nights throughout the fall in the Los Angeles area and at the Concordia University Irvine Campus. Those interested in the program should go to the Ed.D. website to RSVP.

About The Western Association of Schools and Colleges

The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) is one of six regional accrediting associations in the United States. The original purpose of accreditation in the United States was designed to encourage the standardization of secondary school programs, primarily to ensure for the benefit of colleges and universities that graduating students had mastered a particular body of knowledge. Today the process developed by the Accrediting Commission for Schools, Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), involves a dual purpose that continues the expectation that schools must be worthy of the trust placed in them to provide high quality learning opportunities, but with the added requirement that they clearly demonstrate that they are about the critical business of continual self-improvement.
