Concordia University Irvine Launches New Master of Science in Nursing Program

IRVINE, Calif. – August 20, 2014 – In response to the growing demand for nursing educators in the classroom and at the bedside, Concordia University Irvine today announced its new Master of Science in Nursing program (MSN). The program will equip professionals interested in nursing education with the skills and knowledge to instruct undergraduate students and provide clinical teaching experiences in content such as mental health, medical-surgical, pediatric and maternal newborn.

A 2012-2013 study performed by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) showed that eight percent of full-time nursing faculty positions and seven percent of part-time positions were currently vacant at nursing programs around the country. The percentage of vacant faculty positions is expected to increase due to the age of current faculty and the declining number of years left to teach. With this shortage in mind, Concordia University Irvine is focused on providing a higher education for graduates to fill the nursing faculty gap.

“With the national shortage of higher education for nurses, it was clear that Concordia University Irvine needed to establish a program that would foster and support the future generations of nurses,” said Mary Hobus, R.N., M.S., Ph.D., director of the Department of Nursing at Concordia University Irvine. "The Master of Science in Nursing program provides students with the opportunity to translate knowledge and skills into nursing education and practice."

Concordia University Irvine offers small class sizes to allow each student to connect with their professor and peers on a deeper level. The students will be exposed to a challenging curriculum that teaches important critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills in the art and science of nursing. To accommodate working nurses, the degree can be completed as either full-time or part-time study. The program begins on October 11 and is offered in a blended learning format. Classes will meet on campus during the first and last weeks of the course, and the remainder of the course delivered online.

Applications are now being accepted for the Master of Science in Nursing program, and the deadline to apply is September 22, 2014.
