Casting Away Anxiety

Lent 2019

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

1 Peter 5:6-7

We live in anxious times. People are experiencing all kinds of challenges, trials, problems, situations and circumstances in their daily lives. With all that is going on in the world right now, it is no surprise that many are fearful and anxious.

God tells us in His Word that He hears our cries and rescues us from all our troubles. God calls us to live trusting Him. He is our refuge and strength. (Psalm 46:1) In our own strength, we lack sufficient resources and abilities to meet life’s challenges. If we remember that in every circumstance of life, in every time of difficulty, we are not alone and that God is with us, the storms of life will not seems so overwhelming. In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus tells us not to worry. (Matthew 6:25-34) He promised to never leave us or forsake us in Joshua 1:9.

The Apostle Peter tells us Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. (Peter 5:6-7). Humility and anxiety, together, is like fire and water. They cannot exist at the same time. It seems so simple. Ask God for help. He will help. There are over 140 verses in the Bible that told God’s people not to worry; not to be anxious; not to be afraid. When trouble is on your doorstep, give it over to Jesus. Jesus can take care of whoever or whatever is at your door!

We tend to stumble with the phrase “in due time.” When we come to Him we must pray believing He will help. (Hebrews 11:1) God promises that all things work together for good to those that love him (Romans 8:28). Someone once told me, "He may not come when you want him, but He is always on time!"

Said the robin to the sparrow, “I should really like know, why these anxious human beings rush about and worry so.” Said the sparrow to the robin, “Friend, I think that it must be, that they have no Heavenly Father, such as cares for you and me.” (Elizabeth Cheney)

Dear Jesus. Give us peace and contentment in every situation.
