Christian playing the piano

As a child I attended church, but I never dreamed I would work at one! At heart, I am a composer and I always have seen myself writing music.

The reason I picked Concordia University Irvine for my undergraduate studies was the variety of opportunities they offer to music students of all levels. At many larger schools you have to wait to join performing groups and ensembles, but at Concordia I was encouraged to jump in from the very beginning.

Wind instrument and percussion ensembles, a variety of vocal groups, handbell choir, jazz band, and piano and organ lessons; I soaked in each and every opportunity that came my way. I was immersed in so many wonderful groups and invited to perform such high levels of music from the very beginning that I never looked back.

I think those experiences and the relationships I formed along the way were not only foundational in setting the course for my career in church music but also for my faith in God.

Today my journey has led me to places I never imagined. I never saw myself leading music at a local church, but I’m really enjoying it and see it as a natural extension of composing.

You will get great theory, but you’ll also start performing right away!

What’s my advice for prospective students? If you don’t want to wait to start your musical career, Concordia Irvine is the place for you. You will get great theory, but you’ll also start performing right away.
