Faculty in Residence Program
The Faculty in Residence position exists to assist Residential Education and Services by fostering and shaping the social, cultural, and educational life within Concordia University Irvine's Living Learning Communities. As such, the FIR will work collaboratively with Residential Education and Services staff to develop avenues for: 1) community development, 2) student interaction, 3) co-curricular learning opportunities; and 4) academic success and intellectual development of students living on campus.
Qualifications and Expectations
- A full-time Assistant or Associate Professor.
- Able and available to interact on a positive basis with students and staff in the CUI residential setting.
- Committed to the development of an educational and faithful residential community and environment.
- Knowledgeable of general academic requirements, procedures, and campus resources.
- Serve as a role model for adhering to all University and Student Housing policies and procedures. FIR and their family members and guests are required to adhere to housing policies and procedures.
Community Involvement and Student Interaction
The Faculty in Residence will:
- Initiate and sponsor formal and informal programs within one’s Living Learning Community including discussions, lectures, study breaks, or other small gatherings where students have the opportunity to talk with faculty or other appropriate guests.
- As possible, attend and support other programs associated within one’s Living Learning Community.
- Provide 6-8 hours per week of student interaction and community involvement.
- Promote, enhance, and sustain faculty involvement in the Living Learning Community by encouraging greater faculty participation and facilitating meaningful encounters between students and faculty.
Cooperation and Collaboration with Residential Education and Services
Establishing positive relationships and frequent communication among the Faculty in Residence and the hall staff and academic partners/student leadership is essential for the success of this program. As such, the FIR is expected to:
- Meet regularly with the Resident Director and interact frequently with the Living Learning Community RA.
- Attend at least one hall staff meeting each month.
- Attend the RES staff meeting at least once per month.
This is a 12-month, year-to-year housing agreement (June-May) with an annual evaluation each May. The Faculty in Residence is provided year-round accommodation in an apartment within the assigned residence hall and partial meal plans for the fall and spring semesters.
- Housing: The apartment may be partially furnished if requested by the Faculty in Residence. Utilities, local telephone service, Internet and cable TV service, and Faculty in Residence parking in close proximity of the assigned residence will be provided for the faculty member (and spouse, if applicable). A personal mailbox in the Student Union will also be provided if the Faculty in Residence so desires. The program does not cover the cost of liability insurance for personal property.
- Program Budget: A budget of $1,000 is provided for the academic year for programming purposes in order to facilitate interaction between residents and faculty. This budget is managed and distributed by the Director of Residential Education and Services, and use of the funds must be approved by the RES Director.
- Dining: The partial meal plan includes 10 meals per week while classes are in session, along with $150.00 flex dollars to encourage sharing meals with students and guests.
- Pets: Personal pets are allowed within the apartments of Live-On Faculty/Professional Staff.
