Online Writing Lab (OWL)
The Concordia University Online Writing Center Staff provides students in the Adult, Graduate, and Online Learning Programs the help they need to develop their potential as writers.
An OWL consultant will help you identify revisions that can strengthen your work. As in a face-to-face writing conference our time is limited, so we will not be able to comment on every aspect of your draft in a single review.
The consultant will look at clarity of the main ideas, support and development, organization, and other major concerns first. At the level of sentences and grammar, the consultant will pinpoint the most important or most frequent patterns of error. If you would like help with a specific grammar problem in the paper, be sure to mention it in the email message.
You can expect lots of summary and evaluative comments, particularly about specific questions or concerns you raise, but remember that we don’t proofread a paper for you. Our goal is to help you become a better writer.
Papers up to 10 pages (double spaced) are best suited to email instruction. We occasionally accept longer drafts, but these papers may take longer to respond to.
For these longer projects, please submit a section or chapter at a time and request the same consultant on an ongoing basis over a longer period. When you send in your first section/chapter, clearly state that it is a longer project and that you would like to work with one person over an extended period. It is possible to request a particular consultant. If you do, they will let you know if they are available. Once you receive feedback on a section or chapter, revise it before you submit the next one. Include the name of the person you are working with in the Subject Line of you email.
You can get to know the consultants by reading their bios on the Meet the Staff page. The current work schedule is as follows:
- Monday: Justin; Johanna; Joe; Kendall
- Tuesday: Johanna; Colleen
- Wednesday: Angie; Danika
- Thursday: Jenna; Kristina
- Friday: Kendall; Pamela; Lauren
Please note: The OWL is closed on weekends and for all designated holidays. During the summer we will close for Memorial Day (May 30), Independence Day (July 4), and Labor Day (September 5).
Send your draft well before its due date so our feedback reaches you in time for you to revise.

Due to the popularity of the OWL, we are not always able to help every student with each draft. If we are not able to accommodate your request, we will notify you as soon as possible.
Using the OWL is easy:
- Send an email message to firstname.lastname@example.org with the following information:
- Your name
- Your E number
- The number and title of the course along with the instructor's name
- A description of the assignment and its requirements (length, format, due date, etc.)
- A description of your concerns and the specific things you'd like the OWL consultant to review in the paper
- Attach the paper to the email message as a word document.
- On the Subject Line of your email put the course number and assignment (i.e. EDU 581 Educational Research Methods).
