Mike Gonzales was born in Pomona and grew up in Lake Forest, California. He attended El Toro High School where he was a member of the football, wrestling, and baseball teams that won six league championships. He was selected as the South Coast League Defensive Player of the Year during his senior football season as well as placing third in the CIF wrestling championships as a junior. Mike was twice selected as “Athlete of the Year” at El Toro High School.
After graduating high school, Mike pursued baseball at Santa Ana College Junior College where they won the Orange Empire Conference. Mike was selected to the first team All Orange Empire Conference as well as the All Southern California team. Mike then accepted a baseball scholarship to San Jose State University where he was named the team captain.
Mike received his B.A. from San Jose State University and his M.A. in Teaching from Grand Canyon University. Mike served in the Capistrano Unified School District teaching World History, while coaching football and baseball.
In August of 2000, after serving in the CUSD, Mike accepted the position of Head Baseball Coach at his Alma Mater, El Toro High School, where he teaches U.S Government. Since taking over the program in 2001, the Chargers have won seven League Championships and a CIF Championship in 2008. Mike was selected as the Orange County Baseball Coach of the Year by the Orange County Register as well as CIF Coach of the Year, and Diamond Baseball National West Region Coach of the Year, in 2008. Mike has had several of his players earn college scholarships as well as being selected in the Major League Baseball draft. Two of his former players are current Major League Baseball Players. Austin Romine and Nolan Arenado play for the New York Yankees and Colorado Rockies, respectively. In 2013, Nolan Arenado won the “ Rawlings Gold Glove” at third base being the first National League Rookie in history to win the award.
Mike currently serves on the CIF-SS Baseball Coaches Advisory Committee which includes recommendations for rules and procedural changes, recommendations for playoff sites, assistance to coaches and officials organizations, and a liaison between coaches and officials organizations as well as notifying the CIF-SS office of the weekly Top Ten Poll.
Mike resides in Lake Forest with his beautiful wife, Angelica, and their four children, Esperanza, Michael, Robert, and Estrella.
