Irvine Business Professor Named to Kelso Fellowship at Rutger's University

IRVINE, Calif..—Feb 22, 2016--Concordia University Irvine (CUI) business professor Stephen L. Larson was recently named a fellow by the Louis O. Kelso Fellowship at the School of Management and Labor Relations at Rutgers University. Kelso Fellowships are awarded to outstanding scholars studying the topic of broadened ownership of capital in a democratic society in the United States.

Larson’s research, which he began in 2015 focuses on the impact of distributed ownership—also known as Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP)—on a company’s risk assessment model related to market expansion. In the next stage of his research, Larson will be studying the effects of ESOP at nearly a dozen Orange County-based companies in various industries including healthcare management, environmental science, capital management, and construction.

According to Larson, ESOPs can present a problem. “ESOPs can create pressure on a company’s philosophy and challenge the norm of operations,” says the business professor and researcher. “This research will help companies to assess and manage their risk aversion thresholds.”

As a Kelso Fellow, Larson will be part of the network of national professors facilitated by the School of Management and Labor Relations at Rutgers University. The Louis O. Kelso Fellowship encourages scholars to conduct their own work and associate with faculty members at Rutgers University who are engaged in this area of research.

A practicing accountant and university professor for over 30 years, Stephen L. Larson has been teaching graduate and undergraduate accounting courses in the School of Business at Concordia University Irvine since 2008. Larson earned his earned his Bachelor of Arts in business administration and MBA from California State University, East Bay and is currently completing his doctorate studies. The Santa Ana resident is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a member of and instructor for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, a national professional organization of CPAs.
