(3/22/08 - Women's Track and Field) IRVINE - Jessica Gibbs laid claim to the 100-meter school record in the opening meet of the 2008 outdoor season, the UC Irvine Spring Break Classic on Saturday afternoon.
Gibbs posted a time of 12.54 to win her heat and eclipse the previous time of 12.60 set by Jennifer Clouse in 2005. She also put herself within striking distance of the 200-meter record with a time of 26.09. Clouse also owns that record with a mark of 25.93 set in 2005.
Joining her in the 100 was two-way standout Marie Gardner. After clocking a season-opening time of 13.03 in the 100, Gardner moved over to the throwing area and posted a mark of 141'1". That mark was good enough for automatic qualification to the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships at Fresno Pacific in May.
Two other Eagles to start their season were Grace Roth, who posted a throw of 87'6" in the javelin, while Emma Valencia competed in the long jump and in just two jumps landed her best mark of 16'10".
The remainder of the Concordia squad will open the 2008 outdoor campaign this Saturday, March 29 in San Diego as the Eagles take part in the Point Loma Nazarene Invitational.
