Track Trio Take Aim at National Qualification
(1/28/08 - Women's Track and Field) IRVINE - A trio of Concordia women's track and field team members started the 2008 season in fine form by posting national qualifying marks on Friday afternoon at the CUI All-Comers meet.
Two-way returner Marie Gardner stepped into the shot put ring during the indoor season for the first time as an Eagle and made the most of her initial opportunity. Gardner heaved her personal best out to 42'5.75" to book her place at the 2008 NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Jackson, Tenn.
Another oustanding field competitor for the Eagles on the day was Kelsey Wood. She was the winner of the high jump competition and set a school record with a jump of 5'5", also sending her to the national meet next month.
Wrapping up the national qualifiers was Linsie Michels, who took her spot on the track for the 600 meters. She took second in her race and clocked a qualifying time of 1:38.6. Though the time was hand-held and will officially be recorded as 1:38.84, she nonetheless was still well below the national standard.
Two Eagles made their debut on the track and earned high praise from head coach Martin Gonzalez and the coaching staff. Jessica Gibbs competed in both the 200 meters and the 4x400 meter races and performed well for the Eagles. Freshman Aubree Caruana also made her track and field debut after competing with the soccer team in the Fall and drew a strong reaction from her teammates with her solo performance.
Concordia is back home again this Friday, February 1 for a second-straight week hosting an All-Comers meet with throwing events starting at 12:30 p.m.
