Moses, Varela Push On at Ojai
Women's Singles Women's Doubles (4/27/07 - Women's Tennis) OJAI - Sophomore Laura Moses and junior Amanda Varela posted a straight-set victory in their opening match of the 107th Ojai Valley Tournament, Friday morning in the Round of 32. The Concordia duo had little trouble posting a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Megan Shore and April Schiller from Biola. They will be back in action this afternoon against Christina Lalonde and Kelsey Weir of Point Loma Nazarene at 2:00 p.m. Joining them in the doubles competition was the team of Julie Haley and Emily Paulson. The duo was not able to match the feat of their teammates and dropped a 0-6, 6-4, 6-3 match to Natalie Krzmarbick and Kaleena Wakamatsu from the University of Redlands. Senior Michelle Esquivel, who won the community college singles tournament two years ago while attending Orange Coast College, was one of three Eagles to take part in this year's independent college singles tournament. Esquivel won her first round match on Thursday against Leslie Horn of Cal State San Bernardino (6-3, 6-3), but dropped a tough three-set decision to Robin Guier later that day (6-2, 1-6, 3-6). Jessica Rice and Megan Ehlers were also in competition on Thursday, but neither was able to advance out of the first round of play. Ehlers dropped a 7-5, 6-3 verdict to Kelly Hasegawa of Occidental while Jessica Rice was on the losing end of a 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 scoreline to Isabella Kasselstrand of Cal State Bakersfield.
