Eagles Edge Mustangs, 5-4
(2/23/08 - Women's Tennis) NORTHRIDGE - Cristina Paiva and Tiffany Villanueva combined to win their doubles match and swept their respective singles matches to help Concordia to a 5-4 win over host The Master's, Saturday afternoon in Golden State Athletic Conference play.
Newcomers Paiva and Villanueva started the day with an impressive 8-0 win at #3 doubles over Christie Baughman and Amy Trae. The duo then split up to post identical 6-1, 6-1 wins and #4 and #6 singles, respectively.
The Eagles had some work to do as they earned just one of the three doubles points. The #2 team of Jaleh Mazaheri and Julie Haley pushed Jennifer Baughman and Paula Higuchi to the limit, but came up short in a tiebreaker, 7-4.
Needing to split the other four singles matches to earn the team victory, the Eagles got strong efforts from their top two singles players. Amanda Varela posted a 6-2, 7-6 (3) victory at #1 singles over Hannah Leake while Jessica Rice was victorious at #2, knocking off Rebekah Kolstad, 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
Concordia (4-1, 2-0) is back on the court this Monday, February 25 for an important GSAC match against #12-ranked Point Loma Nazarene, hosting the Sea Lions at 2:00 p.m.
